Edward Field, 20, was missing for ten days before police found his body.
His family and friends had searched for the chemistry student at Bristol University and used Internet networking sites to try to find him.
It is understood his body was found in Wells, Somerset.
His family were too upset to talk but his sister posted a message on the Facebook website where more than 3,000 had joined a "group" set up to aid the search for the second-year student.
They included friends from his days at Bedales public school in Hampshire as well as fellow students and others who simply wanted to help.
The website was filled with suggestions and messages of encouragement to the Field family.
Mr Field's body was recovered on Friday evening.
His sister Helen, a student at Durham University, posted a final message to the Facebook group.
She wrote: "Dear all, I'm so sorry to say that we have had some terrible news. Sadly Edward has died. Your support and love has been overwhelmingand we could not have got through this without you."
Mr Field, whose family live in New Malden, Surrey, is understood to have been worried about his end of year exams, although a spokesman for Bristol University described him as "exceptionally" clever.
A close friend said: "Ed was a really bright boy with everything to live for.
"Exam stress may have played a part in what happened but there are a lot of different pressures in student life and it is impossible to know."
