Debt headache: Students protested about fees being introduced for university (file picture)
Students face graduating with mortgage-style debts of almost £40,000 under Government plans to lift the limit on tuition fees.
Graduates on low and middle incomes could find themselves saddled with a lifetime of repayments if ministers go ahead with plans to allow universities to set their own charges.
Currently, universities can charge fees of up to £3,000 a year.
Some degrees could even end up costing more than the qualification confers in additional earning power, according to a damning report from the National Union of Students.
It warned the move could mean many students are priced out of higher education altogether.
NUS president Wes Streeting said: 'Market forces have already crept into our higher education system.
'There is clearly a market of prestige at work, with financial support based not on how much you need it but on where you study.'
