Steve Sinnott, 56, had led the union since 2004, and his death from a suspected heart attack comes just days after its members voted for their first national strike in more than 20 years.
The NUT said last night that his death was "a tragic loss" but that the walkout over pay on April 24 would go ahead.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown led the tributes to the married father of two, saying: "Steve Sinnott was inspirational in his devotion to teaching."
Mr Sinnott was born in Liverpool and began his teaching career there in 1975, until his election as NUT deputy general secretary in 1994.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said: "Teachers, parents and students have lost a doughty fighter."
