But temperatures have taken a decisive tumble and are expected to struggle to stay in the low twenties for the remainder of the week.
"It's quite possible this could have been the hottest temperature we get this year," said Tony Conlan, a meteorologist at MeteoGroup UK.
"There's no sign of a heat wave for the next few weeks."

The rest of the week across the country is expected to be changeable, cool and with a fair bit of cloud.
But Mr Conlan stressed that the low rainfall predicted over the next weeks was a positive.
"It will be good for getting out and about because for the rest of the week it will be predominantly dry," he said.
However, today's temperatures, which are due to peak in the south and east of England at around 23C, could be the warmest for the week.

Recent summers have been exceptionally hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding the 30C mark.
The hottest temperature last year was 36.5C, recorded on July 19 in Surrey.
