Surge in lost luggage is 'enormous'

This year has seen an 'enormous' surge in the number of passengers' bags being lost by airlines and airports, according to figures out today.

Travel insurance company InsureandGo said it had received 85 per cent more lost baggage claims in the first half of this year than in the same period last year.

InsureandGo alone received 2,094 claims between January and June, the equivalent of a bag going missing every two hours.

While Association of European Airlines statistics indicate that lost baggage throughout Europe has increased by 22 per cent from 2006, this fails to take into account data from low-budget airlines - which is included in InsureandGo's higher figures.

InsureandGo managing director Perry Wilson said: "We have seen an enormous rise in claims for lost luggage.

"With the summer holiday season now in full swing, we can unfortunately expect more families' holidays to be ruined.

"We do all we can to help sort out our customers' problems as quickly as possible, but it is up to the airlines and airport authorities to limit this issue in the first place."
