Sweet factory worker dies after becoming trapped in machinery

Killed: A worker was trapped in a machine at a factory that makes rock
An investigation was under way today after a man became trapped in machinery at a sweet factory and died.

The 33-year-old man's leg got caught by the machinery at Parrs Quality Confectionery Ltd in Poole, Dorset.

He was treated by ambulance staff but pronounced dead at hospital at 3am.

Police have sealed off the machine at the factory, which makes lettered rock, motto lollies and seaside novelties, for crime scene officers to examine.

Officers were also talking to other staff members about the death of the man, who worked at the factory and was from Bournemouth.

"There are no suspicious circumstances," a Dorset Police spokesman said.

The Health and Safety Executive and the Coroner have been informed and police are tracing the man's next-of-kin.

Chris Marshall, managing director of Tangerine Confectionery which owns the factory, said: "We can confirm that in the early hours of this morning one of our colleagues was tragically killed in an accident on the production line of our Poole factory on Alder Road, Parkstone.

"The emergency services were immediately called and production was halted.

"We are investigating the matter fully and are working with the appropriate authorities."

A Tangerine spokesman said the night shift staff had all been sent home following the man's death.

He worked as a starch room operator responsible for helping to operate a depositing machine which transfers a liquid mixture of starch, sugar and other ingredients into moulds before it sets into gums and jellies.

The factory, known locally as Parrs Quality Confectionery Ltd, was taken over by Tangerine Confectionery in 2006 and employs 150 people.
