Ten officer cadets are being treated for flu-like symptoms after a colour sergeant working in the quartermaster's department was confirmed to have the virus.

Staff at the Oxford Street branch of Topshop, which attracts 200,000 customers a week, have also been alerted after a sales assistant fell ill.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said soldiers at Sandhurst, which was attended by Princes William and Harry, had been notified of the outbreak. All those feeling unwell were being screened by the Health Protection Agency. There were also fears that if the bug spread, the academy would have to close temporarily.

A Sandhurst source said the virus could have already been passed on to others in the Camberley community after 2,000 locals attended the Surrey academy's annual heritage day on Sunday.

"The authorities knew about the outbreak before heritage day, so it was a strange decision to let it go ahead," he said.

"If people have caught swine flu because of that, there will be hell to pay." The colour sergeant had regular contact with many of the 750 cadets, issuing them with equipment and weapons. He was diagnosed last Friday after feeling unwell for a week and immediately put into quarantine at home.

At Topshop, bosses have told all staff that if they feel any symptoms they should get checked out immediately and should not go to work. The infected member of staff has not been identified.

Sir Philip Green, who owns the Topshop brand, part of his Arcadia group, said: "We have not been notified of any new cases in the nine days since this matter came to light. We have sought proper medical advice and briefed our staff."

The new cases of swine flu came as the newborn baby of the first Briton to die from the virus lost his battle for life. Jack Fleming was born prematurely 15 days ago weighing little over 3lb.

His 38-year-old mother Jacqueline, from Glasgow, was induced after contracting pneumonia but then suffered symptoms of swine flu. She died on Sunday afternoon.

Mrs Fleming leaves two other sons Ryan, 18 and Sean, 11, and partner William McCann.
