Swine flu phone line to be closed

The national swine flu hotline and website will be closed in response to a steady fall in swine flu cases.

The Government said today that the National Pandemic Flu Service is being "switched off" on 11 February in a sign that the UK outbreak is largely over.

People with suspected swine flu will be directed to their GP instead of the antiviral collection points from next week.

Health minister Gillian Merron said the hotline could be re-activated in seven days should it be needed.

The Government faces accusations of wasting taxpayers' money over the country's stock of surplus swine flu vaccines.

It has refused to release a figure but has admitted drugs companies will not take back surplus stock.
