Tate Modern to grow as museums and art galleries get £190m

The allocation from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, announced today, is a 147 per cent rise in cash terms over the last spending round.
The pot includes a £50 million grant made yesterday for a planned extension of Tate Modern. Even without that, a total of £141.3 million over three years represents an 82 per cent increase on the last period.
Around £108million will help maintain the buildings and maintenance of collections at national museums and galleries, including the National Museums Liverpool and the Museum of Science in Manchester as well as the likes of the British Museum and National Gallery in London.
Many of them are listed buildings and suffering increased wear and tear from a big rise in visitors.
Some of the cash will go towards new ventures, including £5.7 million for the next phase of the Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum and £10million towards new conservation facilities and exhibition space at the British Museum. The Imperial War Museum is funding a new art store and major roof repairs out of its share.
Culture minister Margaret Hodge said: "We are determined to ensure our national museums continue to thrive as centres of excellence, scholarship and innovation."
London museums and galleries will receive allocations as follows: British Museum (£22.55million); Geffrye Museum (£450,000); Horniman Museum and Gardens (£1.5m); Imperial War Museum (£12.6m); National Gallery (£12.75m); National Maritime Museum (£9.75m); National Portrait Gallery (£1.58m); Natural History Museum (£18.2m); Sir John Soane's Museum (£275,000); Tate (£62.75m); Victoria and Albert Museum (£10.2m); Wallace Collection (£4.5m).
