Taylors' top record run

Record-breaking Merchant Taylors' School can put another feather in their cap: they are the Evening Standard's 1stXV Team of the Month for December.

The North London outfit beat Crosby Merchant Taylors' in Liverpool 27-10 to seal the best season in the school's long history. It brought them a final tally of 12 wins and two losses in their 15 games.

Rugby head Tristan Greenaway said: "To make it even more gratifying, nine of the fixtures were away."

He added: "Inspirational captain Marcus Alexander Neil has been monumental in setting the highest standards. Vice captain Richard Walker-Taylor has been the fulcrum for our expansive game."

It was also a fine finale season for Caron Evans-Evans, 1st XV coach for 11 years.

The award, sponsored by Canterbury New Zealand, is for the most-improved team rather than the best. Other notable contenders were Epsom, Halliford and Hurstpierpoint.

Schools hoping to win this year include table-topping St Benedict's Ealing and KCS Wimbledon.
