Teenage girl stabbed after internet row
17 July 2007
A 14-year-old pupil was described as being in a "stable condition" last night after she was knifed in the abdomen near Filton High School in Bristol.
Her alleged attacker, a girl, also aged 14, is in custody at the city's Staple Hill police station this morning after being charged in the early hours.
Eyewitnesses spoke of their shock following the incident.
The mother of two students at the school claimed her children said the victim had recently been involved in "an argument over a boyfriend" on website Bebo.
Luke Ryan, a 13-year-old pupil at Filton High said: "Everyone was crying - it was horrible.
"I didn't see her lying on the ground. After it happened we all came running out. She was surrounded by about 50 kids."
Luke's mother Margaret Ryan, 43, from Stoke Gifford, said she is now scared to let her son walk to school on his own.
Ms Ryan told how her son and daughter, Sarah, 16, both knew the teenage stab victim.
The self-employed businesswoman said: "My son came out of school and I could see his head was down. I asked him what was wrong and he told me what had happened.
"It terrifies me that such a thing could happen to a young girl at a school like this."
Mike Walsh, 43, from Filton, whose son is in year eight, said he was shocked but "not entirely surprised" to hear about the stabbing.
He said: "It is horrifying but we fear things like this happen every so often.
"A similar incident happened when I was at school. It's hard on the youngsters. I'll have a word with my boy."
Details of the weapon used in the stabbing have not been released at this stage. The victim is being treated at Bristol's Frenchay Hospital.
The stabbing took place on the WISE campus of Filton College which lies metres away from Filton High School.
The teenage girl being held in custody is not believed to be from either school.
Brian Freeguard, councillor for the Filton ward on South Gloucestershire Council, said: "We know that there is a problem with young people carrying knives but Filton is not one of the areas where knife culture is an issue."
