Four male youths - two 17-year-olds, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old - were arrested nearby, and are now in custody at a south London police station.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Duthie, of the Metropolitan Police's homicide and serious crime unit, said: "Another youth has lost his life through knife crime, and we urge anyone with information to come forward as a matter of urgency."

A post mortem will be carried out on the victim, who was from the Peckham area of south London, at Greenwich mortuary.

The 15-year-old's death has sparked concerns among the community that London's knife crime is soaring.

Just days ago, a 23-year-old man was stabbed repeatedly while waiting to buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV in South Croydon.

And last week, three men were stabbed outside Katie's Kebabs in Peckham, after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith visited the area to prove it was safe.

There were four killings in March alone in different parts of the capital.

According to Metropolitan Police figures, 26 teenagers were murdered in London last year in stabbings and shootings.

Of these attacks, 16 young people died after being attacked with a knife, nine in gun incidents and in one case the cause of death was unconfirmed.
