They were told by the young man's friends he had been out nightclubbing and had taken seven Ecstasy tablets as well as cocaine.

A source at the nearby Galeno clinic said: 'Our paramedics went round immediately but the lad was already lying dead on the bathroom floor.

'His friends were distraught. It is a terrible waste of a young life.

'His friends told us he had been out nightclubbing and had taken seven ecstasy tablets as well as cocaine.'

An autopsy was due to be carried out today, but the toxicology results will not be known for several weeks.

The six-floor, 109-room Central Park apartment complex, 150 meters from the beach, is hugely popular with British youngsters.

The victim was part of a group of four young men who arrived for a week-long holiday last Thursday.

Police only released the 19-year-old's initials  W.J, which is standard practice in Spain.

A member of staff at the apartment complex said: 'The lad checked in with three friends last Thursday and collapsed in his room in the early hours of Sunday morning.

'His friends gave statements to the Civil Guard officers and we haven't seen them back at the hotel since then.'
