Teenager who shot youth worker dead is jailed for 21 years

A teenage thug was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years at the Old Bailey today for murdering a youth worker who wanted to devote his life to helping others.

Junior Glasgow, 17, shot Nathan Foster, 18, six times because of a dispute over a gold chain that had been stolen by another youth.

One bullet hit Mr Foster in the heart. He died wearing a T-shirt bearing the face of his son, Raheem.

Mr Foster, who worked helping children at council-funded Ebony Horse Club in Coldharbour Lane, had been talented enough as a rider to have turned professional, according to his former teacher. However he had opted to go into childcare and was studying for vocational qualifications.

But in August last year he was shot dead in Brixton, the innocent victim of a gang dispute. Some sources believe he had been trying to intervene as a peacemaker.

Glasgow, of Brixton, wore a motorcycle handgun and shot Mr Fosterwho was with a group of friends. Witness said Glasgow yelled: "You lot are trying to undermine me."

Mr Foster, one of six children, had left school with GCSEs and was naturally shy but thrived on the ambition to help others.

"He wanted to make a difference," said his sister Shannel. His mother Vanetta Bell added: "He was a gentle, sweet boy. He was never involved with bad people. He was dedicated to working with children."

Nathan joined the horse club at the age of eight. Founder Ros Spearman said: "He was an outstanding young man, happiest when on a horse. Out of about 200 kids learning to ride from central Brixton no one has ever come near his standard. He could have gone to equestrian college but he was more interested in working with young people."
