The officer was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa as police tried to stop the speeding vehicle using a stinger device to puncture its tyres.

He is now being treated for serious injuries in hospital.

The youths, aged 14 and 17, are suspected of stealing the car from outside a house in Carlisle in the early hours of the morning.

The car then left a petrol station in the Workington area without paying for fuel, Cumbria Police said.

At about 5.15am, it was spotted driving erratically and at high speed and was followed by police.

A stinger device was used at a roundabout near Cockermouth to burst the car's tyres.

The car then hit a police vehicle and the male police officer. He is being treated in West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

The two teenagers, both from the Carlisle area, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.

Deputy Chief Constable Christine Twigg said: "When an incident like this happens to an officer going about their normal duties, it has a major effect on family, colleagues and the wider community."
