Terror suspects 'filmed at al-Quaeda training camp in New Forest'

They were taken on a mobile phone during a camp for alleged holy war warriors in the New Forest.

The footage shows a group crawling, wrestling, jumping across streams and throwing themselves into forward rolls to prepare them for attacks on British soldiers, a jury was told.

An Army officer told Woolwich Crown Court that many of the techniques demonstrated were "favoured" by al-Qaeda insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Three men standing trial are accused of travelling to the New Forest in Hampshire on April 28, 2006, for a four-day camp organised by Mohammed Hamid, whom prosecutors claim set up a similar outing for the July 21 bomb plotters.

The short clips from the trip were recovered from a computer owned by Kibley da Costa, 24, of West Norwood, south-east London.

One image shows a man, dressed all in black, dropping to the floor and lying flat on his stomach holding a long stick in front of him like a rifle.

He then stands up, and bounces on his knees with the stick again in front of him.

The Army officer, referred to in court as soldier A, told the jury: "I have seen that used as a method of carrying a weapon system.

"It is not something that is taught by the British Army. I have seen it used by insurgents while in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan."

Asked with what type of weapon, he replied: "An AK-47." In another

clip, two men conduct a string of forward rolls.

Again, they hold a large stick in front of them. Off camera, someone is heard to shout "don't waste time".

A third film shows a man taking a running jump at a stream with a steep bank. A group of men are waiting for him on the other side.

The officer said the men held sticks as "makeshift rifles" in the same way as fighters he faced in Iraq.

One video showed the men trying to jump a stream in a wooded area, cheered on by the camera operator.

As one man struggled to cross the water and eventually fell in, the court, including some of the defendants and jury, erupted in laughter.

Silent footage from a camera hidden by police in the woods was also shown to the court.

Soldier A said the group practised a fireman's lift which could be used to evacuate wounded soldiers.

An undercover police officer who infiltrated the group said that Da Costa had told him that they were "extreme" after a meeting the week before the New Forest camp.

Conversations recorded by a bugging device in Hamid's home in September 2005 were also played to court.

In one he is heard saying: "Allah has turned around and said every Muslim should be ready for jihad."

Hamid, 50, denies providing weapons and terrorist training, soliciting murder and possessing terrorist documents.

Da Costa, denies providing and attending terrorist training and possessing terrorist documents.

Kader Ahmed, 20, of Plaistow, east London, denies attending terrorist training.

Two others, Mousa Brown and Mohammed Al-Figari, deny terrorist charges. The trial continues.
