Thames Water fined £8,000 for dangerous holes

Thames Water must pay £8,000 after leaving dangerous holes in a road for a week.

The holes in Broomfield Avenue were not properly protected by barriers or signs, according to Enfield council, which brought the prosecution. Officials visited the site and contacted Thames Water and contractor Morrisons plc seven times in six days. Lordship Lane magistrates fined Thames £4,000 with £4,000 costs in a rare successful council prosecution of a utility firm.

Enfield councillor Terry Neville said: "It's a sad day when a major company such as Thames Water cannot carry out works without regard to the safety of motorists and pedestrians." A Thames spokesman said: "We take health and safety very seriously and have reviewed our processes."
