The Influentials: Who's in and who's out

Our magazine revealing London's most influential people has triggered a fascination among Londoners eager to discover who is really calling the shots. In response, this new weekly column by Simon Davis will help you keep a check on who's in and who's out.

TOUGH AT THE TOP

OUT: Vivienne Cox, 46
BP, EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT

A victim of Tony Hayward's shake-up. Cox rose under former chief Lord Browne and was in charge of gas, power and renewables. Cox keeps her title but heads a smaller alternative energy arm.

IN: Eric Knight, 49
KNIGHT VINKE ASSET MANAGEMENT, CEO

The shareholder activist is the scourge of boards as powerful as Suez and Shell. He has mounted a ferocious onslaught against HSBC, taking out adverts and seeking meetings with its senior figures. Eton and Cambridge-educated, he bases his attacks on research, patience and courtesy.

NEW ON THE LIST

John Mackey, 53
WHOLE FOODS MARKET, FOUNDER AND CEO

The publicity shy vegan has made an indelible mark on London's retail scene with his organic superstore in Kensington and there is talk of a branch in Canary Wharf. Famed for his gnomic utterances about life, love and food, he is actually a hard-as-nails businessman.

GOING PLACES

Ian Henderson, 64
DOLPHIN SQUARE FOUNDATION, CHAIRMAN

Last week moved closer to his aim of investing the £.. million his foundation received from the sale of Dolphin Square in affordable homes in Westminster with Peabody, Crisis UK and Berkeley Group on board.

ON THE MONEY
Our list omitted Sir Menzies Campbell but included Nick Clegg as "...most likely to succeed ailing Campbell". Last week the Lib-Dem leader resigned and Clegg was confirmed as the man to watch.

MAKING THEIR MOVES

David Chipperfield, 53
ARCHITECT

Considered an unsung hero, this exponent of unflinching modernism has just won the Stirling prize. So much for the teacher who thought he was so hopeless he should become an estate agent.

Charles Dance, 61
ACTOR
His performance in Shadowlands at The Wyndhams is regarded by some as the greatest of his career.

Jamie Hince, 38
MUSICIAN

As Kate Moss's new boyfriend, the guitarist for The Kills has been elevated to new social heights.

GROWING IMPACT

Chloe Green, 16
Daughter of Sir Philip is the chief teenage sounding board for Topshop ideas. She was seen at the launch of the high street chain's new range last week, confirming her clout.
