The leaning tree of Trafalgar...

Looking more like the leaning tower of Pisa than an upstanding spruce, London's Christmas tree took a battering from gale force winds early today - within hours of being put up.

Loose spruce: the Trafalgar tree

The 70ft tree, with 500 lights, appeared perilously close to toppling over in Trafalgar Square in the early hours, but has since been propped back up. However, it may be at risk again as the Met Office today issued a severe weather warning of winds up to 75mph.

The tree is a traditional gift from the people of Norway, and their prime minister Jens Stoltenberg switched on the tree's lights last night.
