The moment police risked their lives to disarm a man on a knife rampage
10 July 2007
Dressed in a vest, shorts and slippers, the man had been threatening shoppers in the East Sussex resort of Hove.
Cornered by police, he lashed out - attacking a patrol car and stabbing one officer before he was finally wrestled to the ground.
Yesterday, it emerged that two weeks before the incident, police had forced their way into the man's flat after his brother warned them he was "going to kill someone".

The stand-off: With the knife (circled) pointing straight at them, two officers stand yards from the man and try to calm him down
The man was detained under the Mental Health Act but released within days.
These pictures were taken by resident Brian Butterworth shortly after 11am last Saturday.
'I kept thinking this is Saturday morning in Hove,' he said. 'There
shouldn't be a man with a knife wandering around.'
At one stage the man tried to plunge his knife through the roof of a moving police car before he was thrown from the vehicle.

The escape: After felling one officer, the suspect runs
Four officers - two men and two women - were then involved in a stand-off with the knifeman and he pushed one policeman to the ground before trying to run off.
When the officer tried to restrain the suspect, he was stabbed in the chest but escaped unhurt because he was wearing body armour.
Finally, the officer was able to hit the man on the wrist with his baton and force him to drop his knife. Police then arrested the suspect.

The capture: Finally disarmed, he is floored and handcuffed
Ayhan Kilavuz, 36, of Hove, appeared before magistrates on Monday charged with making threats to kill and intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody until October.
Last night, the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, which had been in charge of the man's care, said: 'We are checking whether we did what we were supposed to do . . . and to make sure what should have happened did happen.'
