The nurses who will come knocking at the homes of fat primary school pupils

Nurses will make unannounced visits to the homes of obese primary school children to try to sign them up to a weight- loss programme.

The controversial 'cold-call' project is aimed at securing the help of parents in getting children to reach a healthier weight.

The project by East Lancashire Primary Care Trust will start after primary pupils in the area are weighed when they return to school in September.

Pupils identified as very overweight will then be visited by specialist nurses who will try to draw up a fitness and diet plan to get them back into shape and try to avoid future health problems.

Across the country most PCT's are sending letters to parents of the heaviest pupils.

Latest figures show that around one in four ten-year-olds is overweight, compared with a national average of 16 per cent.

The East Lancashire trust's director of public health Dr Ellis Friedman said the project was 'very serious'.

'Where a child is found to be overweight, our aim is certainly not to stigmatise them but to help the child's family address the issues positively and within their means.'
