The SatLav system that will guide you to the nearest public toilet

A 'SatLav' mobile phone service which alerts people to the nearest public toilets launched today.

Westminster City Council's scheme works via text message requests from shoppers, workers and tourists.

Texting the word 'toilet' to the number 80097 prompts a quick-response text with details of the nearest facilities and their opening times.

Mobile phone technology - dubbed SatLav - locates the texter and automatically finds the nearest public toilets to them.

The service includes details of 40 council-run and leased toilets plus those run by the GLA, London Underground and some department stores.

Westminster Council said its scheme was expected to make a "...substantial impact on reducing street urination".

The service covers the 8.5 square miles of Westminster which attracts one million people daily.

Texts are charged at 25p each with the council paying a further 9p to cover the cost.

The scheme is currently only available in Westminster, but could spread to other boroughs

Westminster's cabinet member for street environment Cllr Alan Bradley said: "From today onwards nobody should ever get caught short again, and we understand how important that is, be it for a young mum with children in tow, older people or friends on a shopping trip or night out."

The SatLav service was the brainchild of 26-year-old student Gail Knight from Clapham Junction who won a Westminster City Council innovation competition.
