The street where vandals scratched every single parked car and caused £250,000 worth of damage

Danger: The street where vandals struck
Vandals caused £250,000 damage by scratching every parked car in one street.

They attacked more than 80 vehicles in the quiet south London road, systematically damaging paintwork on doors, bonnets and boots.

No car was spared, ranging from new BMW saloons and top-of-the-range Jaguars to second-hand Hondas and Peugeot run-a-rounds, and every vehicle panel was scratched.

The attacks happened on two days last week - in Crescent Lane, Clapham - in broad daylight.

On the first day, about 20 cars were damaged but residents who thought that was the work of mindless passers-by found the vandals had returned the next day to complete the job.

Resident David Johnson said: "You expect the odd bit of damage, maybe a broken window, once in a while, but this was a systematic attack.

"They've purposefully made sure they've scratched every panel on the car.

"I'm looking at around £3,000 to repair my Volkswagen Passat but my neighbour had a new BMW.

"There are others with Mercedes, 4x4s, Jaguars. It's going to cost a lot of money to fix."

Residents believe schoolchildren could be the culprits as the attacks took place immediately after the school day finishes at 4pm.

Police officers on cycles increased patrols around Crescent Lane after the attacks, but householders believe the culprits will not be caught and are now parking their cars streets away from their homes.

Mr Johnson said: "It's quite absurd when we've all been able to park right outside our homes.

"This is a quiet street. We've never had much of a problem with vandalism or car theft so it's hard to comprehend why we've been targeted.

"A lot of us are holding off on repairing our cars as we fear they may come back again.

"The vandalism happened during broad daylight on a busy street so you would have thought somebody would have witnessed it.

"When I spoke to the police they just said they'd had lots of calls but nothing about catching the people who did it."
