The Tory boy plotting Benazir’s ‘revolution’... from Gillingham

A controversial race adviser to David Cameron is playing a leading role in Benazir Bhutto's campaign against emergency rule in Pakistan under General Pervez Musharraf.

Conservative Parliamentary candidate Rehman Chishti, 28, a close ally and former aide to Mrs Bhutto, has called for a 'revolution' in Pakistan.

It flies in the face of the Tory Party's more cautious official policy of calling on General Musharraf to grant free and fair elections and release political detainees following the recent violent crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Pakistan.

In a BBC-TV interview about the general, Mr Chishti, who will contest the plum marginal seat of Gillingham, Kent, said: 'These are desperate measures by a desperate man trying to cling to power. There is no other option than to go on the streets.'

He called on the people of Pakistan to copy the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, where protesters waving the opposition party's orange flags toppled the Russian-backed government in 2004. The Pakistan-born lawyer told The Mail on Sunday: 'I speak to Mrs Bhutto every day and we have decided the concessions made by Musharraf are not enough.'

He defended his call for Gen Musharraf to be brought down by a 'revolution', saying: 'In a civilised world there is nothing wrong in people coming out on to the streets in a peaceful way to say they don't like a certain course of action.'

Asked if his view was in line with his party's official stance, he said: 'I fully support the Conservative policy. I am giving you my personal view,' before hanging up.

Mr Chishti has had a meteoric, albeit unconventional, rise through the political ranks. He stood for Labour against Tory MP Francis Maude at the last General Election and was feted by Cherie Blair. But less than a year after losing, he defected to the Conservatives in a blaze of publicity, saying he had lost faith in Mr Blair.

Tory chairman Mr Maude, a close ally of David Cameron, appointed Mr Chishti as an adviser on race and ethnic minorities and backed moves to promote him to the party's new 'A' list of candidates. He also appeared in a video with Mr Cameron.

Initially turned down for the 'A' list by a panel which included Mr Cameron's Commons aide, New Forest MP Desmond Swayne, he was given special permission to be put back on the fast-track list within months – in defiance of rules that say candidates must wait a year before re-applying.

He was appointed as the party's candidate for Gillingham this year, which meant he had to cut back on his work for Mrs Bhutto. But she showed her high regard for him by visiting him in Gillingham, where she sang his praises to local Tories.

'He is a role model for politics,' she said. 'My loss is Gillingham's gain.'
