The woman who gave her boss a new kidney

An employee gave her boss a kidney after tests showed the pair were a perfect match.

Angela Dawson, 44, was described as "an angel" by grateful Alma Caldwell, the chief executive of North Tyneside Age Concern, after the transplant was a success.

She said: "The magnitude of the gift is overwhelming.

"For someone who is not even a blood relative to even think about doing this is amazing." The transplant took place after tests on Ms Caldwell's mother and sister showed they were not a match.

The 49-year-old was diagnosed with polycystic kidneys four years ago and was put on dialysis. Mrs Dawson is Ms Caldwell's second-in-command at the charity in Whitley Bay and have worked together for 12 years.

Mrs Dawson, married to Malcolm and mother of Amanda, told the newspaper: "The fact that we were a match is amazing.

"The doctors said there was just a 30% chance that a non-relative would be a match. They couldn't believe how close they were."

The chief executive is recovering at home, while Mrs Dawson was at work but unavailable for comment.
