There's plenty of petrol to go round, say garage owners

Long queues appeared at some petrol stations today ahead of a strike by tanker drivers but garage owners denied motorists were panic buying.

More than 500 tanker drivers who serve 1,000 Shell garages nationwide are threatening to stop working for four days from 6am tomorrow over pay demands.

The Petrol Retailers Association joined the Government in talking down fears of a crisis and appealing to motorists to behave responsibly.

Ray Holloway, of the PRA, said the action will affect only around one in 10 of the country's 9,500 filling stations.

"With nine in 10 customers already not going to one of these forecourts that may be affected by a strike, there is absolutely no reason to panic," he said.

"Only 500 delivery drivers out of 3,500 across the UK are affected by this. Added to that, forecourts carry a four-day supply of fuel that should keep them going until the end of the strike."

However, a spokesman for the Department for Business and Enterprise said: "If the strike were to affect other retailers it would have a more significant impact."

Last-ditch talks led by conciliation service ACAS were being held at a secret location.
