Thousands of hatchback cars recalled after handbrake fault leaves dozens rolling down hills

Nearly 80,000 Honda Civics were recalled today due to a fault with the handbrake - which has seen dozens roll down hills.

Car owners are being offered a free replacement handbrake following a spate of complaints.

A full-scale probe was launched by the manufacturer after dozens of calls from unhappy owners.

Investigators found that there was a small safety risk if the release button was knocked by drivers when applying the handbrake.

Nearly 80,000 2006 and 2007 Honda Civics are being recalled due to a handbrake fault

The multi-million pound corporation has now promised to solve the problem.

A spokesman for Honda confirmed that the company is sending letters to all Civic customers in the UK advising them to take care when applying the handbrake.

He said: "As a responsible manufacturer we felt it was important for us to inform our customers as soon as possible.

"We are asking customers to visit their local Honda dealer and have a new handbrake fitted free of charge.

"We appreciate this is an inconvenience for customers."

The design flaw applies to Civics built between 2006 and 2007.

The Civic is Honda's biggest selling model, with almost 100,000 a year being produced since 1994 at their facility in South Marston, near Swindon, Wilts.
