Thousands stranded as half the Tube network is shut or delayed
13 February 2012
Hundreds of thousands of commuters were left without a service on the Tube today because of signal failures and late engineering work on the worst day on the Underground this year.
The disruption, which saw five lines - virtually half the entire network - either closed or suffering huge delays, was described as "unacceptable".
Thousands were left stranded as the Jubilee, Metropolitan, Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines were all part suspended. Jubilee line services - used by more than 650,000 passengers a day - were suspended between Willesden Green and Stanmore, with severe delays over the remainder of the route.
Commuters trying to switch to the Metropolitan line found that too suspended between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Aldgate. There were also delays on the Harrow-on-the-Hill to Amersham, Watford and Chesham lines.
Transport for London said the chaos was the result of a late finish to weekend engineering work. South London commuters also suffered as the Victoria line was hit with delays at the height of the morning peak due to a signal failure
at Brixton.
As the morning rush hour began to build, the Bakerloo line was suspended between Queen's Park and Paddington due to a signal failure at Queen's Park. The line later reopened but only with severe delays the length of the route.
Val Shawcross, London Assembly Labour group transport leader, said: "No wonder millions of Londoners who are facing daily delays and closures while paying sky-high fares are increasingly demanding the Mayor get a grip of the transport system."
There were fears of delays for commuters getting home this evening as the chaos continued into the afternoon. The Bakerloo line suffered a second part suspension at lunchtime and services were suspended through central London between Queen's Park and Elephant & Castle - after another signal failure - from 12.03 until 12.41.
