Thousands struggle to exit the Glastonbury mudbath

Thousands of bleary-eyed fans leaving Glastonbury today were struggling to get away from the site - as cars and camper vans got stuck in the infamous mud as the rain continued to fall.

Tractors helped tow vehicles out of the boggy car parks, but even then drivers faced the challenge of negotiating their way out of narrow gates as their cars slid in the thick mud.

Cars queue to leave - eight hour tailbacks are expected on roads around the site

Long tailbacks formed in and around the festival site in Pilton, Somerset, as tens of thousands made their way home after three days of music and mayhem.

Avon and Somerset Police meanwhile said crime was down on 2005, with 297 recorded this year compared to 328 for the previous festival. Officers made 183 arrests, mainly for drug offences.

Superintendent Adrian Coombs, who led the planning for this year's event, said: "We thought it would be tough to beat 2005's reduction, but as the thousands of people go home, it is the safest ever festival.

"The weather has been a challenge for all concerned, but we prepare for bad conditions in the planning for the event and this has certainly paid off.

"We are now involved in the considerable operation to get people off the site and away from the area.

"Festival car parks are proving difficult to get away from and the roads are inevitably congested, but we would ask drivers to be patient."
