The shamed golfer spoke for the first time since the scandal that ruined his career in a grovelling fifteen minute speech.
In a live television address he told how he was sorry for letting his friends and supporters down and that he was deeply embarrassed for his behaviour.
"What I did was not acceptable," he said. "I know I have thoroughly disappointed all of you. I have made you question me and how you have done all these things.
"I want to say I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and for the selfish behaviour I have engaged in.
"I know people want to find out how I could be so selfish and foolish. People want to know how I could have done these things to my wife and children.
"I have always tried to be a private person but there are some things I want to say.
"Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behaviour."
Speaking at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach the world number one insisted his wife had never hit him, dispelling rumours that Elin Nordegren had hit him with a golf club when she discovered the affairs in November last year.
During the strictly-controlled appearance at the headquarters of the US PGA Tour in Florida, the 34-year-old added: "Now everyone has a good reason to be critical of me."
