Wayne Bell, 38, and Clint Charles, 40, alleged that a white constable, John Harrison, subjected them to racist abuse including ape impressions. They claimed the force failed to take their complaints seriously, issuing Pc Harrison with "words of advice".

Today they withdrew the claims in a settlement with the Met which involved the force giving them a "letter of regret" and agreeing to pay a "token sum". The Met denied failing to investigate the claims.

Pc Harrison denied being racist, and said there had just been a "clash of personalities" between himself and Mr Bell.
