Tony Benn, aged 82, plans shock return to politics as Labour election candidate in Kensington
04 October 2007
The 82-year-old Left-winger, who quit as an MP in 2001 after 50 years, hopes to stand in Kensington.
If Labour selects him he would join his granddaughter Emily, who at nearly 18 will become the youngest person to run for Parliament after being selected to fight East Worthing and Shoreham in West Sussex for Labour.
Victory for both would see three generations of the Benn dynasty in the Commons.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn is Emily's uncle and Mr Benn's second son. The pair are, however, unlikely to win in the staunchly Tory areas.
The Kensington constituency has been revived in the latest shake-up of seats, which takes effect at the next election.
Mr Benn, who last represented Chesterfield, said: "I'm not sure if I would be selected but I'd like to do it. I don't think my age would be a problem.
"I believe in peace, not taxing students with enormous loans and securing a referendum on the EU."
