Tories race into eight point lead

The ComRes survey for The Independent puts the Conservatives eight points ahead on 41 per cent, with Labour slipping four points to 33 per cent and the Liberal Democrats gaining one point to reach 16 per cent.
If repeated at a General Election, the results would give the Tories a narrow two-seat Commons majority.
The figures will alarm Labour's high command, who had been convinced the Tory surge had come mainly at the expense of the leaderless LibDems.
The poll also reveals that Conservative gains over the past month are due mainly to a swing among men, younger voters and those living in London and the South East - a key election battleground.
Last month, polls showed Labour enjoyed a lead in London and the South East of up to 39 per cent.
The tables have dramatically turned, with the Tories on 50 per cent and Labour trailing on 26.
The Conservatives also appear to be better at energising their core vote, with 93 per cent of voters who call themselves "natural Conservatives" saying they intend to back the Tories.
In contrast, the proportion of Labour "identifiers" who say they will support the party has dropped from 88 per cent to 81 per cent since last month.
Political analysts say the figures are due to Gordon Brown's failure to call an autumn election and Tory proposals on cutting inheritance tax and stamp duty.
