Town hall cinema will lead a £15m Hornsey renaissance

A cinema and performance space is to be created in north London as a "cultural rival" to Camden.

Haringey council is transforming Hornsey Town Hall in Crouch End to inspire people to go farther north for entertainment.

The Grade II-listed hall was the first major Modernist building in the UK and has similarities to the interior of Tate Modern.

It is occupied by council staff but will be transformed into a two-screen cinema while a courtyard will be covered with a glass roof and used for exhibitions, cafes and performances.

The old council chamber will be used for conferences and ceremonies. The architect behind the £15million plan, John McAslan, said: "We hope the transformation of the magnificent town hall will inspire the community, in much the same way the Roundhouse has helped rejuvenate Camden."

The building was designed in 1935 by Reginald Uren, then 27, when he won a competition to draw the plans for £100,000.

The asymmetrical style is typical of local government building of the late Thirties and Forties, which drew inspiration from US architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

The redevelopment will be funded by selling land behind the hall which is expected to raise £10million.

Work is due to start next year and should be completed in 2012.
