Network Rail 'to axe staff who commute too far'

The company which runs the national rail network is planning to axe hundreds of staff because they live too far from the office, union bosses claimed today.
Network Rail is moving its Euston headquarters to Milton Keynes in the summer and the TSSA union says NR has stipulated staff must live within 75 minutes' travelling time of the new £30 million headquarters.
Managers have been given more leeway and can live up to 90 minutes away.
The union estimates 850 staff, mainly those living in Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, will lose their jobs but any move to axe staff could be challenged through the courts.
Manuel Cortes, the TSSA leader, said: "This is an unfair and arbitrary decision which we believe to be unlawful. This modern version of Beat the Clock to get to work is a complete nonsense."
