Travellers still waiting for bags lost in T5 launch

Many air travellers have still not been reunited with their luggage following the fiasco at Heathrow Terminal 5 when it opened four weeks ago today.

A senior source at BA's £4.3 billion new home said: "It is still the case that hundreds, possibly thousands, of passengers are waiting to get their bags."

BA's complaints department remains "inundated" with calls about luggage.

Hundreds of flights were late or cancelled and many passengers flew without their belongings in T5's first days as the baggage handling system broke down. At one stage 28,000 items were being waited for. A BA spokeswoman said: "The overwhelming number of passengers have got their bags, but there will still be some who haven't."

There were fresh fears of problems today because of threatened walkouts by immigration and passport control officers in a national day of action over pay.
