Tree-killing beetle that feeds on oak, beech and shrubs has arrived on plants imported from China

A beetle that can kill or damage many of our native trees and shrubs has arrived on plants imported from China.

The citrus longhorn beetle can affect trees such as oak, beech, apple and pear, and shrubs such as roses and hibiscus.

They develop inside plant stems and tree trunks, taking up to three years to emerge. Large holes are left by emerging adults.

Other symptoms include damaged bark, leaves and stems and T-shaped slits in bark where eggs have been laid.

Tops of shrubs and trees can die off and sometimes the entire plant, said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
