The 57-year-old, who endured three harrowing trials to win justice for her murdered son, collapsed with a suspected heart attack while walking in Shooters Hill on Tuesday.
Her devastated husband Richard, 59, said: "Gloria was a wonderful woman - my best friend. But now she's gone. I can't believe it." Mrs Taylor collapsed in the street and died in hospital.
Her death comes eight years after Damilola was killed walking home from the library after school.
He was cornered on a stairwell on the North Peckham estate, in November 2000. In 2006 teenage street robbers Danny and Ricky Preddie were found guilty of manslaughter and jailed for eight years.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said of the Taylors: "I know their fortitude throughout three criminal trials and their almost unshakeable faith that the truth would be known was an inspiration to Metropolitan Police officers and staff." Ken Livingstone said: "I was always struck by her dignity, courage and determination to give hope and opportunity for young people in London."
Gordon Brown praised Mrs Taylor for helping to set up the Damilola Trust. Tony Connell, the CPS lawyer in charge of the case, said: "She had suffered greatly since the death of Damilola and one can only hope it did not contribute to her passing."
