Tube bosses: we can't cope with Games

Tube services will not be able to cope with the thousands of extra people attending the 2012 Games, London Underground has admitted.

With 500,000 spectators travelling in London every day during the Games, Tube chiefs said they are facing a "huge challenge" in trying to carry the extra people in addition to commuters. A damning report by LU found there will be a "significant gap" between services and demand.

It added: "To meet the projected demand requires more than 30 additional trains beyond midnight."

But Transport for London said: "We are investing billions of pounds to improve the Tube, and the Olympic site will be the best ever served by public transport. The Jubilee line upgrade is due in 2010 and will provide a big increase in capacity."
