Tuition fee fears hit the gap year

Ten thousand teenagers have scrapped gap year plans to avoid higher university tuition fees.

There has been a 50 per cent drop in applications from students who want to travel or work abroad before starting higher education, according to Projects Abroad, which arranges overseas trips.

Most universities will increase fees to the maximum £9,000 from next year, but students who start university this September will pay just over £3,000 a year throughout their degree course.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has warned that student numbers could fall by 36,000 next year because so many universities have opted for the maximum fees.
