Dangerous driving habits are on the rise, according to research.

Two thirds of motorists admitted to risky behaviour in the past year  -  3 per cent more than did last year  -  a survey found.

More than a quarter had driven while tired and 18 per cent had driven barefoot or in flip-flops.

Of those polled, 17 per cent admitted speeding and 14 per cent owned up to talking on a mobile handset while driving, while 11 per cent had used one to text at the wheel.

The number of motorists reading a map while driving rose 4 per cent to 17 per cent, 10 per cent had driven without a seatbelt on, while 9 per cent had indulged in drinking and driving.

Motorists from the North West were the most 'dangerous', with 76 per cent admitting bad habits. Scots came across as the safest, with just 59 per cent owning up to risky behaviour.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's Car Insurance, which carried out the survey, said: 'It can be easy to become complacent behind the wheel of a car especially when driving regular routes, but our advice is to stay alert and safe and don't allow yourself to be distracted.'
