UK refugee facing jail for Paris attacks

Terrorist who was held in Britain as a refugee for more than a decade faced life in jail today after finally being brought to trial in Paris.

French prosecutors said Rachid Ramda, 39, should serve at least 22 years for attacks on the Metro which left eight dead and hundreds injured.

Despite being a prime suspect for the 1995 bombing of St Michel station, Algerian-born Ramda was granted asylum in Britain. He was kept in prison, but his time in the UK caused a diplomatic outcry. It was not until after the 7/7 attacks in 2005 that Ramda was sent back for trial.
