Upson tips Spurs to strike gold

Matthew Upson believes it is Tottenham's potent goalpower which will help salvage their season following their troubled start.

West Ham central defender Upson, who was outstanding against Juande Ramos's rejuvenated team, said: "Spurs are definitely a top-half side when they get going and get a bit solid as a team.

"They look very good going forward and the fact they have four top strikers who can all score goals will soon lift them up the table. In Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, they have two of the best players in the Premier League."

Upson, who has seven England caps, endured a difficult start when he joined West Ham from Birmingham last January, but has been ever-present in the Premier League this season and still harbours hopes of an England recall.

"For myself, making another England squad is the one outstanding personal ambition for me," he said.

"It doesn't make any difference to me where the next England coach comes from. But the selection process needs to be looked at. The FA need to make contact with people with expertise in that area."

Upson was also critical of referee Mike Riley in the 1-1 draw. "Some of the contact situations in which we were penalised were 50/50, normal derby challenges. It spoilt the game a bit," he said.
