Vauxhall prepares for a 'jaw-dropping' stunt to advertise its new model

If you are worried that aliens have landed in London - fear not.

The rocket which appears to have embedded itself into the banks of the Thames at Potters' Fields Park near  the capital's City Hall is actually a teaser for the world launch tomorrow of Vauxhall's new Insignia model.

Though the scene may have sci-fi shades of Doctor Who or Professor Quatermass, it  is actually the run-up to what the car company predicts will be a 'jaw-dropping' stunt involving the new vehicle potentially being suspended from a great height.

Is it a bird, is it a plane? No. It's the new car from Vauxhall

The Insignia is chic new replacement for the Vauxhall Vectra.

The stunt will take place within sight of landmark Tower Bridge at lunch-time tomorrow on the eve of the British International Motor Show which opens to the press on Tuesday and to the public from Wednesday.

The new  Vauxhall Insignia, costing from £15,000 to about £24,000, has as an optional extra camera that will tell the driver the speed limit if they happen to miss it.

The system aims to help drivers stick to the speed  limit - and keep their licence.

The British Motor Show which runs until August 3 will  feature 600 cars from more than 60 manufacturers at the  ExCel centre on the banks of the Thames in London's docklands.

The show, spread over an 800,000 square ft site,  is backed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the trade association of the UK Motor industry.

More than £37.4million of cars will be on show, including the £1million, 258mph Bugatti Veyron.

Details of and tickets for the British International Motor Show at www.britishmotorshow.co.uk or call 0871 230 5588.
