Victorious Obama praises 'valiant' Democrat rival Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton was hailed yesterday by victorious Democrat rival Barack Obama for blazing a trail for women in her White House campaign.

The former first lady had finally endorsed her opponent the previous day in a speech to mark the end of her bid to become America's first woman president.

'I am thrilled and honoured to have Senator Clinton's support,' said Mr Obama yesterday.

'But more than that, I honour her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run.

'She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams.'

Mrs Clinton, 60, showed her support for Mr Obama, 46, on Saturday in a speech to reunite the Democrat Party after months of bitter campaigning.

She vowed to work her heart out to help him win November's presidential election against Republican choice John McCain, 71.

But she arrived 45 minutes late to the speech, wore black and did not name her rival until 650 words in.

There were boos from some of her supporters when she urged them to back Mr Obama.
