The black and white female is thought to have climbed aboard the trailer of the lorry at a council rubbish dump in Southwark and then been locked inside accidentally.

She was found only when the driver reached his destination in Okehampton four hours later.

The RSPCA is hoping the cat's owner will recognise her from this photograph and reclaim her.

RSPCA collections officer Felicity Cross said: "Hopefully somebody will get it touch so we can reunite them with their pet."
