We thank readers for the response to our campaign. We pledge to fight on

Our five-day series on The Dispossessed has been shocking. Few could have known that babies were still being buried in paupers' graves in 21st century London. Or that doctors in the East End would describe young patients as Third World victims, with bloated stomachs and lacking nourishment. Prince William was so moved by our reports that he issued a "call to arms" against poverty in a personal message through the Standard.
The response from our readers was unprecedented. Thousands came forward with offers of money and help. Never in our paper's history have so many readers contacted us to say they will not tolerate this degradation. We challenged leaders of all three main political parties to declare their plans to tackle poverty. And so far, we say very clearly that they have not done or said enough.
Our campaign is not over. It is an issue to which we will keep returning. We promised one year ago — when the paper had a new owner — to be a campaigning newspaper that celebrates the greatness of London.
We will not let you down.
