Welcome to Islington & High Crime

Islington has been named the seventh-worst place to live in Britain.

The ranking - in a survey by Channel 4 property programme Location, Location, Location - puts it slightly behind Newham, London's most deprived borough, which is ranked third-worst.

Hackney, Barking and Dagenham and Haringey all make it into the worst 20, with Middlesbrough voted the worst of all. The list is based on criteria such as crime rates, the number of people falling into official poverty measures, educational achievement, obesity, diet and salaries.

Islington is well known for its Georgian terraces and Upper Street's bars and restaurants, but the borough has pockets of extreme deprivation, many schools struggle with poor results and crime levels are higher than other comparable London boroughs. Last year Hackney was voted the worst place to live.

Presenter Phil Spencer said: "Each year we seem to create a storm of controversy with this survey, but it's all based on official data."

The data comes from sources including councils, the Home Office and the Office for National Statistics.

The best place to live will be announced on the show on Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
