Charges for parking to the north of Oxford Street will go up £1 to £4 an hour and in Soho and Victoria from £4 to £4.40.

Westminster council defended the charges, saying it had to reduce taxpayer funding. But Paul Pearson, of the London Motorist Action Group, said: "It is pure greed when businesses and motorists are feeling the pinch. Businesses are struggling with the opening of Westfield."

Lobby group London First said: "Few will applaud this, but the West End is well-served by public transport."
