What the papers say...
03 October 2008
The Daily Telegraph: His time in office has been noteworthy for its egregious "political correctness", a rapid rise in the stabbings of teenagers, and, ironically, given Sir Ian's "progressive" credentials, a row over alleged racial discrimination. Morale has collapsed, senior officers are in despair and the force has lost its way.
The Sun: Sir Ian Blair's leadership of the Met Police had collapsed. London Mayor Boris Johnson showed welcome steel by ending this degrading saga and ousting Blair. The case for a fresh start is overwhelming.
The Guardian: The apolitical nature of British policing is not only a tradition, but a great strength. The manner of Sir Ian Blair's departure raises serious questions about whether it is under threat.
Daily Mirror: From the shooting of innocent Jean Charles de Menezes to race and sleaze allegations swirling around his peaked cap, Sir Ian's brief reign was far too controversial.
